A mixer grinder is one of the kitchen appliances that has a permanent spot on the countertop because you use it almost on a daily basis. Mixer grinders from reputed brands are durable and last for 5-7 years. But with a little bit of care, you can stretch its life up to a decade or more.
In this article, we bring to you some such easy and practical tips to keep your mixer grinder as good as new for a really long time.
Plastic Lid Is Not Your Enemy
Many people consider mixer grinders jars with plastic lids as inferior in terms of quality. But, that is not necessarily the case.
Plastic lids don’t stain as badly as polycarbonate when grinding spices. In fact, garam masala can react with polycarbonate and cause permanent discolouration if you don’t clean it immediately after grinding. So, if you have interchangeable lids, use the plastic one for grinding garam masala, turmeric and other spices.
Prevent Yellowing Of Motor Housing
Motor housing tends to yellow over time due to exposure to dirt, heat and light. In order to prevent this, clean up spills immediately. Once in a while, wipe the appliance with a sponge soaked in a mixture of 1/2 cup bleach, 1/4 cup baking soda and 4 cups warm water. Leave it for 10 minutes and then wipe it with a damp cloth to remove any bleach residue.
Run The Jar With Dishwashing Solution
In order to remove food residue stuck in the screws and underneath the blades, fill the jar to its half with a few drops of dishwashing liquid and water. Run it at the slowest speed for 30 seconds. Then rinse the jars and lid in running water.
No Scrub, Only Sponge
Abrasive scrubs can cause scratches on the stainless steel jars and the polycarbonate lids. So instead, use a sponge.
Indian mixer grinders jars are not designed to be cleaned in a dishwasher. Their bottom jar locks don’t have a hole through which water can seep away when kept in a dishwasher. So, water accumulates in the jar lock. Every time you take the jar out of the dishwasher, you will have to toss away the dirty water accumulated and rinse it. Over a period of time, this accumulated water can damage the coupler.
In addition, polycarbonate lids and stainless steel jars develop scratches when washed in the dishwasher.
Avoid Frequently Grinding Tough Spices
Though mixer grinders can be used to grind tough spices like turmeric, it isn’t advisable to do so on a regular basis. It may not be a problem if you do so once in a while when you have run out of any spice powder. But if used regularly, the blades and coupler of even the best mixer grinder will get damaged, affecting the durability of the appliance.
Instead, grind turmeric, coriander and chilly powder in bulk from a local mill. It can last for up to 2 years if stored in an airtight container without exposure to moisture.
Never Overload The Mixer Grinder
If you overload the grinder or run it continuously for a long stretch, the motor will get overheated. Though the overload protection switch cuts off the power, it isn’t exactly ideal to frequently push your mixer grinder to its limits.
Ideally, load ingredients to less than 3/4th the jar capacity. Run the mixer grinder continuously for a maximum of 2 minutes, followed by 5-minute rest. This way, it can run for 30 minutes after which it should be given a 45 minutes break.
